About this paper

Every road has a first mile. A road can run longer than any driver will ever travel it; it can cross country no living person has surveyed end to end; but if it is a road, it began somewhere — there is a first stretch of it, laid down before the second stretch could exist. In 2003, Arvind Borde, Alan Guth, and Alexander Vilenkin proved the cosmological version of that plain fact, and they proved it as a theorem, not as an opinion: any geodesic along which the average expansion is positive is past-incomplete. Inflation cannot be extended eternally into the past. A bounce embedded in net-average expansion cannot be extended eternally into the past either. There was a beginning of the average-expanding region, whatever the word "before" is supposed to mean on the far side of it. The theorem does not close the road. It does something narrower and, for the literature that grew up around it, more uncomfortable: it forbids advertising the road as having no beginning. And yet the advertising continues. Programs speak of eternal cycles — oscillation without a first turn, expansion and contraction forever in both directions — while owing the theorem an account of their geodesics' average expansion, an account almost none of them files. This paper prices that gap, and then prices my own side of the same page with the same honesty. My corpus's portrait is structurally compatible with the theorem in a way most bounce programs are not — compatible at the level of the portrait, and I fence it at exactly that grade in this sentence and in every sentence where I spend it: the pool in my record is founded, pinball drops, the gathering begins, so the frame asserts a founding event per lineage rather than a past-eternal oscillation, and owes the theorem no apology. But no computation in my corpus integrates the average expansion along the seam geodesics, so its compatibility is portrait-grade: the reframe is real, and the engagement is not a derivation. My own road admits its first mile. The survey of its average slope has not been run. The measured toll, 3Ω_Λ = 2.055, stands NOT PRODUCED; its production form is owned as form only, at a declared input. The residue stands adopted, never derived. Grade for this dead end, printed at full size: PREMISE-ONLY. The program headline stands unmoved: vacuum catastrophe NOT SOLVED / PARTIAL, producing-count 0.
